So after searching around a few forums for a while I found the solution to an annoying problem I have been having with firefox opening in my 2nd monitor (not the default monitor). The solution is really simple all that needs to be done is shrink firefox & drag it over to your default monitor. Then shrink & maximize the view a few times by hitting the button with two small squares on it right next to the X in the upper right of the browser. Once you do that close the browsers and it will now open by default in that window

Well the St. Louis Blues pulled of 2 deals last week as the trade deadline approaches and personally I am a hugh fan of both of the trades. Brewer Trade: The first trade we will go over is the Brewer trade. I think this was a great move! I have not liked the style of play that Brewer brought to the Blues and was completely befuddled that they made him captain of the team. After hearing his interview about being traded I understood a bit better the personality & character that he has, but watching him play hockey has been painful for me the entire time he played on the team. He often appears to not be trying hard, and makes critical mistakes reliably. I was just happy to see the team cut ties with him and end the saga of having a captain that the majority of the town didnt even think was the best defensmen on the team much less the best player. Johnson/Mclement Trade: This trade, as has been widely reported, was a blockbuster. I was truly shocked that the Blues made this move… I also was extremely excited that they made the move as well! I think we addressed a critical need at forward, got a very productive defender in return and overall improved our team greatly. Thinking about the team over the next 2-4 years gets me very excited… our top forwards could be Backes, Stewart, Mcdonald, Steen, Oshi, Berglund, Peron, & Tarasenko… that is as good as it gets and would be a very competitive team up front. Combine that with the promising young defense we are still crafting and assuming we can get a #1 net-minder out of the crop of Halak, Shields, & Bishop the team looks to be in great shape moving forward. I think it is true that this trade is very risky, but I would not be surprised to be looking back on the trade in 5 years and saying that this deal was one of the best in Blues history, and that both players we got ended up being better than Johnson.

There was a great post written on one of my favorite blogs today about Net Neutrality. To read the post on Net Neutrality follow this previous link. In general I know that this is a very important debate going on right now, and personally I am not sure of exactly what is being proposed by the government. Almost all information presented on T.V. seems to be very misleading on this subject, and short of reading a ton of information it seems to be best summed up by the following quote: “Net Neutrality” legislation (not the principle of net neutrality which is good) is excessive in turning over more power to a goverment bureaucracy in order to fight some problem that might occur in the future Note: not happening now, anywhere, at all. And as any coder, engineer, or even plumber will tell you, when you try to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist, you’re far more likely to create new REAL problems that are even worse” In general I am always very suspicious of the government “helping me” through legislation because it so often seems that legislation has many bad consequences. I think in large part this is due to the fact that for the most part only lawyers represent us in congress. The thought of a bunch of lawyers making decisions on technical ideas such as the regulation of bandwith by ISP’s is truly an absurd proposition. I am not sure why there is never any thought given to any other professions being able to represent us in congress… (would the debate on healthcare be more productive if there were say 50 doctors in congress that actually know about this issue they are discussing? Perhaps…

1.) The move away from traditional desktop computing and into the cloud will continue and will pick up speed. While it is true that privacy concerns and the concern of actually “physically owning” your content will hamper this growth. I think the data concern is legitimate, but all that is needed is a system that “backs-up” your data instead of hijacks it. Something similar to the Google Laptop that was just released, combined with Carbonite the data backup software would be ideal. I love the idea of running a minimalistic Linux based machine that backs up all my data… I just don’t like the idea of running a machine that doesn’t store any of my data locally, and doesn’t give me the option of if I want it backed up in the cloud or not. 2.) Android will overtake the Iphone/ipad. While it is true that apple has a big lead I think the openness of android is going to win out. I do admit that for a basic user Apple might be a better platform, they “wall everything bad out” but at the same time wall you into their ecosystem. This will start to become a true annoyance, and in 2011 people will start to realize that having a large company make all their decisions for them only makes things more convenient for so long, and after that just becomes annoying Open source always wins, and while the claims by Apple are valid that the android app store is fragmented, they don’t understand that doesn’t matter. If you offer an operating system that is open and isn’t susceptible to “red tape” it will win because it can be configured by individuals so much easier. Once the organization problem is solved (or even if it isn’t) android will pass Apple and never look back. 3.) Microsoft will continue its fall into irrelevancy. Microsoft hasn’t come out with a cool or innovative product since… I cant really even remember. As people start to do more and more computing on phones and tablets they will realize their is almost no need for windows. I don’t foresee large business starting to move away from windows at all, but individual users really are not locked into windows. It is not hard to setup a Linux based system of your own, or more than likely people will start to turn to computers that are setup more with cloud computing in mind. The days of being able to charge people ~100 for an opperating system, and then another $80 for software to create word documents is over. 4.) Google will become a data provider. Either they will launch their program to offer internet connections (remember topeka kansas/Google Kansas?). More interesting is I think Google with seriously flirt with the idea of offering Mobil phone service. 5) Facebook will become the number 1 player. Facebook has already passed Google in internet traffic, and they will continue to grow. Ultimately I think they will be hit with privacy concerns/make the mistake of focusing too hard at beating google and shot themselves in the foot big time but I don’t think that will be for 2 or 3 more years. I think they can/should merge with skype and offer the best way to communicate with people you know online. 6.) WordPress will continue its tremendous growth. I am personally a HUGE fan of wordpress. I think that wordpress truly empowers almost everyone to own and operate a very professional website of their own. As bigger business realize the benefits I think many more will transition to wordpress. Additionally I think wp-ecommerce will be transformed to become an actual reliable e-commerce solution (or a different competitor will show up)

I hope that our Young guys (and Mcdonald) can get back into the fold for what will hopefully be a playoff push and I look forward to hopefully taking some “Altec business trips” to some blues games in the near future.

Just wanted to do a quick post about the android phones that we got a few months back. Both Brian and I absolutely love these phones. My favorite feature has been the turn by turn directions (I am perpetually lost so that has been a huge help!) In general I had not bought into the ihpone or any other smart phone (obviously as I don’t by into almost any apple products, I don’t like the idea of not being able to control the software on my own device and that is the philosophy apple takes which admittedly works very well for most users just not myself) Anyway I previously had a blackberry storm and quite frankly planned on switching back to something simple the next time a contract came around. However Brain found a deal where we could both buy Android phones for $30.00 each so I figured what not give it a try. It only took about an hour for me to realize I really liked this phone, and it took even less time to root the phone and play around with all the different features (as well as start making a simple app for the phone). Stopping short of doing a full review of the phone I will leave you with these two links. 1 is of useful apps for android, and the other is to the android developers hopepage, this phone is really quite simple to work with and you should definitly try you hand creating a simple app just for kicks.

Anyway I previously had a blackberry storm and quite frankly planned on switching back to something simple the next time a contract came around.

IBM announced a very interested new style of memory they have been working on for several years today. The concept sounds very cool, it goes a little something like this: Racetrack memory — a new technology design which stands to improve memory capabilities within mobile phones, laptop computers and business-class servers. This new class of memory could enable devices to store much more information – as much as a factor of 100 times greater – while using much less energy than today’s designs. The Racetrack memory project — which started in IBM’s Research labs only six years ago — flips the current memory paradigm on its head. Instead of making computers seek out the data it needs – as is the case in traditional computing systems – IBM’s Racetrack memory automatically moves data to where it can be used, sliding magnetic bits back and forth along nanowire “racetracks.” This technique would allow electronic manufacturers to design a portable device capable of storing all the movies produced worldwide in a given year with room to spare. To read in more detail about the new technology you can follow this link: http://www.nanowerk.com/news/newsid=19543.php
