There was a great post written on one of my favorite blogs today about Net Neutrality. To read the post on Net Neutrality follow this previous link. In general I know that this is a very important debate going on right now, and personally I am not sure of exactly what is being proposed by the government. Almost all information presented on T.V. seems to be very misleading on this subject, and short of reading a ton of information it seems to be best summed up by the following quote:
“Net Neutrality” legislation (not the principle of net neutrality which is good) is excessive in turning over more power to a goverment bureaucracy in order to fight some problem that might occur in the future Note: not happening now, anywhere, at all. And as any coder, engineer, or even plumber will tell you, when you try to solve a problem that doesn’t really exist, you’re far more likely to create new REAL problems that are even worse”
In general I am always very suspicious of the government “helping me” through legislation because it so often seems that legislation has many bad consequences. I think in large part this is due to the fact that for the most part only lawyers represent us in congress. The thought of a bunch of lawyers making decisions on technical ideas such as the regulation of bandwith by ISP’s is truly an absurd proposition. I am not sure why there is never any thought given to any other professions being able to represent us in congress… (would the debate on healthcare be more productive if there were say 50 doctors in congress that actually know about this issue they are discussing? Perhaps…
